Roundtable Dinner
on the occasion of the UN Climate Change Negotiations
December 2, 2011, 8.30 pm, Durban (South Africa)
The European Business Council for Sustainable Energy (e5) and the Forest Carbon Group AG (FCG) company will arrange a Roundtable Dinner concerning the private sector’s contribution to forest conservation. The role that forests play for climate protection has become a relevant issue also for Europe’s business community. Policy makers recognize that the business community must be included in forest conservation – not only reactively by reducing forest degradation in the production processes, but proactively through business models that promote and strengthen forest conservation and afforestation. At the same time, it is important to see forest conservation not only in terms of carbon capture and environmental protection, but also from its socio-economic perspective, for human beings have been living off the forests for generations. Holistic approaches are needed.
In recent years comprehensive instruments and business models have been developed on the voluntary carbon market that ensure the sustainability and additionality of forest conservation projects. The experiences that have been gained there can be used for the current discussion about REDD+, even if it is necessary to assess how business should be included and if, when and on what terms carbon markets should play a role. Examples of this are the procedures for measuring and ensuring the sustainability performance, as well as complex business models that take consideration of the various sustainability dimensions of forest projects. At the same time, the voluntary market itself must initiate reforms, in order to both convince investors and ensure that the demands by civil society for justice, holistic environmental protection, economic development and the upholding of human rights are fully met.
On the occasion of the international climate negotiations in Durban, e5 therefore invites you to a Roundtable Dinner at which representatives from industrialized and developing countries, experts from development cooperation, entrepreneurs, as well as representatives from civil society are to exchange views regarding the future of the carbon markets for forests. The topic of the dinner is the question:
How should business models be designed so that the business community fulfills its responsibility toward forest conservation?
The dinner will be held on December 2, 2011, at 8.30 pm in Durban (South Africa) on the occasion of the UN climate negotiations that are held there.
Participation is only possible by personal invitation. If you think you should be invited please contact:

The event is a part of the e5 project:
Forest Conservation and Afforestation as a Contribution to Climate Justice.
The Contribution of Business to the Sustainable Development of Carbon Capture
For some years now, the European Business Council for Sustainable Energy (e5) has been addressing the question of how companies can contribute to global climate justice. How should business models and economic cycles be designed so that they take the right of developing and emerging countries to overcome poverty and misery as seriously as the fact that in these countries, too, the emission of greenhouse gases must be decoupled from the economic development? What does this mean for forest conservation? You will find a detailed description of the project and its background here.
